Apple’s Face ID is still a nightmare for Android phones
Well, We Know Google Nexus phones from nearly a decade ago that would register your face and use it to log you in your phone. But Apple’s Face ID was different.
Odds of a random person being able to unlock an iPhone with Face ID is 1 to 1,000,000 (that’s a million) compared to 1 to 50,000 for Touch ID fingerprint scanning.
It’s been almost two years and a half years since Apple launched the iPhone X, the first phone with Face ID, a secure biometrics system that was able to recognise your unique facial features and allowed you to effortlessly unlock your phone.
For Face ID the device uses about 30,000 invisible dots placed on your face to create an extremely detailed map of your unique facial features. A picture was able to fool many other face recognition systems. But Face ID is a lot more secure & it can also be used in some core functionalities within the iOS on a regular usages such as, Apple Pay, App Store purchases, password auto-fill, and many more,.
Well, When Apple launched Face ID in iPhone X it wasn’t amazing. It has few issues and also bit slow. But Apple iterated it to an extent where its much faster and secured. It is allowing now wide angle as well.
Way back in 2018, a few publications quoted major parts producers who said that with Face ID, Apple at the time had a “two-year lead” on the Android competition. But even today, not much progress can be seen in the competators.
Samsung phones are probably the worst offenders in this regard: the ultrasonic in-screen fingerprint scanner used on the Galaxy S20 series and the Note 10 series earlier is slow and not very accurate.
LG phones, Sony phones, and on most others also have tried face unlock mechanism. But none has a secure 3D face unlock ability.
Google with its latest pixel 4 has added Face ID sensor which is in closer set but has its own issues on same. would unlock the phone even if you are not looking at it intentionally, which makes it compromised on security standpoint.
The secure face recognition system on iPhones has proven itself convenient and successful.
So the statement remains valid till date that Apple’s Face ID is a nightmare for Android phone makers.
