PS5 pre-orders may be limited to one console per customer
The official PlayStation Direct site suggests PS5 pre-orders will have a one console per customer rule.
PlayStation 5 pre-orders could be restricted to one console per customer, according to source code spotted on the official PlayStation e-commerce site, PlayStation Direct. As noted on Reddit, you can head to this page on Sony’s Direct retail site, click ‘View page source’ in your browser, search for PS5 and you’ll see the following message:
“You can only purchase one version of the PS5™ Console: Disc or Digital. You have already added one PS5™ console to your cart”.
Despite Sony reportedly doubling up PlayStation production to meet 10 million units, this restriction isn’t hugely surprising considering Sony imposed a pre-order limit for the PS4 console back in 2013. Now, since this message isn’t listed on the actual page as it stands, it may just be a placeholder message on PlayStation’s Direct website. The very specific wording, though, suggests a one-per-customer rule on ordering the console is planned, no matter which version you want.
It’s interesting, too, that this message is relatively easy to find, despite Sony setting no date on when the PS5 will actually be available for pre-order.
- PS5 versus Xbox Series X: who’s going to win?
As PlayStation head of marketing Eric Lempel said last week, “We’ll let you know when pre-orders will happen. It’s not going to happen with a minute’s notice. We’re going to at some point let you know when you can pre-order a PlayStation 5 so please don’t feel like you have to go run and line up anywhere until you receive official notice on how that will work.
Demand for the PS5 is likely to be incredibly high, so this sort of rule only levels the playing field for customers who want to get hold of the console. Hopefully this’ll make it easier to find the console in the run up to the end of the year. The PS5’s release window is likely in ‘Holiday Season 2020’.
